Fleischer Sues Paramount, DuMont And Other Companies[1]

The renowned filmmaker Max Fleischer is suing Paramount, DuMont Broadcasting, and other companies $2,750,000 for televising showing his shorts "without proper credit and authority."

Attorney Stanley H. Handman has filed an action in the New York Supreme Court, requesting a permanent injunction to prevent any of his shorts from being shown on TV.

Among the shorts Paramount sold to UM&M Corp. were Fleischer's products, such as the "Superman" and "Betty Boop" series. National Telefilm Associates later acquired UM&M Corp.'s assets.

Eliot Hyman was sold his "Popeye" reels. Insisting that the credits have been "altered and mutilated," Fleischer argues that his product cannot lawfully be shown on TV in conjunction with commercial advertising and that this has hurt his reputation.

Max Fleischer declared last week in New York that he wants to stop the improper exploitation of his reputation and the films which he produced. Fleischer added, "In certain instances credits have been inserted which mislead the public by giving credit to people who never had anything to do with the production of my films. I will not consent to being relegated to anonymity by allowing others to reap the artistic prominence and financial reward of my lifetime of creative work in the motion picture field."
