Jerry Beck

Jerry Beck is the most knowledgeable historian of animation. As a child he dreamed of being a cartoonist, and admired characters such as Huckleberry Hound and Yogi Bear.

In 1977 he worked with Leonard Maltin on Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons. When he graduated high school he learned that animators were not in demand, so he decided to go into the animation historian field. He later became a writer, college professor, an author in which he released more than fifteen books.

He is a former studio executive for Disney and Nickelodeon, and has written articles for Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. He has curated cartoons for blu-ray and DVD compilations, and has contributed to documentaries and had provided audio commentary.

He had input on the release of Betty Boop: The Definitive Collection and helped with the release of The Definitive Betty Boop: The Classic Comic Strip Collection.

  • In 2003 he married vintage jazz singer Marea Boylan, the two later divorced.
  • He was born on the 9th of February, 1955.
  • He was a good friend of Betty Boop voice-match Cheryl Chase, who is famous for her role in Rugrats. They have great chemistry together. He married Chase on the 25th of June in 2021.
  • Was left out of the production and input of Betty Boop: The Essential Collection by Olive Films. As of 2023, Olive Films became defunct, stating that they are no longer adding titles or selling any products.
  • When King Features signed a deal with Hooters to make Betty a mascot, Beck complained.
