Name

Chic Kennedy

Chic Kennedy was a comedienne and Broadway performer, who claimed in 1931 that she had originated "Poop-Poop-a-Doop" which was made famous by Helen Kane when she was taken ill. According to Miss Kennedy, she was playing at the Paramount Theatre in New York City in 1928 and did a Bowery dance and a song of the "Poop-Poop-a-Doop" type. Kennedy claimed that she was the originator of the idea, however she became ill with her place being taken by the Helen "Sugar" Kane, "Poop-Poop-a-Doop" girl of the theatre movie world, who used Miss Kennedy's phrase in a show and became famous before Miss Kennedy could recover from her illness. Chic Kennedy was described in a 1938 article by The Billboard for her Lowe's State, New York appearance as an amusing monolog done in the accent of an optown Yiddisher mommola. Characters essayed by Miss Kennedy included Zasu Pitts, Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo and Stepin Fetchit. Kennedy topped off her act with take-off on familiar nursery rhymes.
