Cheryl Chase's Helen Kane and Betty Boop Impersonations: |
Cheryl Christine Hudock Chase[1] born in Manville, New Jersey is an American voice actress, best known as the voice of Angelica Pickles on the cartoon series Rugrats. Cheryl is known to be an old-school cartoon fan and is a big fan of Bugs Bunny from the Looney Tunes franchise.
Children in the Manville, New Jersey, area where she grew up teased her for having a baby voice.[2]
During the early 1990s, she worked as John Kricfalusi's secretary for the Spümcø animation studio and provided additional voice-over for The Ren & Stimpy Show.[3] During the mid-90s, Chase used to do a one-woman show as Helen Kane in which she was given great applaud for her impersonation. She was once listed on an early 90s blog, the blog insisted that if Betty Boop was to be rebooted, Cheryl should have been given the titular role due to her "Boop-Boop-a-Doop" show.
Chase actually "intones" the role of Betty Boop[4] in the Somewhere in Dreamland DVD audio commentary, which was released in 2000. Chase sings two songs as Betty which are "Betty Boop's Little Pal" and "Poor Cinderella" on the DVD. Cheryl Chase has also provided the voice for Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl. She was dubbed, arguably the world's best Helen Kane impersonator by the Crazy Rhythm Orchestra. Chase was also a frequent voice cast member on The Ren & Stimpy Show.
She appeared at the "World Animation Celebration" as a "Boop-Boop-Be-Doop" singer, there alongside jazz singers such as Shannon Cullem, Dean Mora, Will Ryan and "Mister Tin Pan Alley" Richard Halpern, they celebrated the musical animator Sammy Timberg.
Jerry Beck a close friend of Chase, complimented Cheryl and told her in the Somewhere in Dreamland commentary that she sounds better and is a better singer than one of Betty's several original voices Bonnie Poe. Today Cheryl Chase is a children's book writer, she released her debut book That’s Coola, Tallulah! in honor of her late mother, featuring her own original characters Tallulah and Stella Bella.
Chase also re-recorded the song "Little Pal" the exact same song she sang on Jerry Beck's 2000 DVD, in her Betty Boop voice for her brand new VO demo reel. Chase is also said to be a fan of Betty Boop and the Fleischer Studios cartoons.
In 2021, Chase married her long-time friend Beck who she met at Nickelodeon, and became his wife.
As of 2022, Cheryl appeared on a TV network called MeTV and MeTV Plus, on that network she did an impersonation of Mae Questel, Betty Boop and Olive Oyl. There she sang "A Language Of My Own" as Betty Boop. Chase is officially Mae Questel's "spiritual successor" in the world of Boopdom.
Quotes
- Cheryl Chase: "If I could star in a biopic I would choose to play Helen Kane, the original 'Boop-Boop-a-Doop' girl. In the 20s, she was successful in vaudeville that led her to be a promising musical comedy star at Paramount Studios."
- Cheryl Chase: "Helen Kane's career was cut short by the success of Fleischer’s Betty Boop animated series."

Like Betty Boop (1998)
Chase realizes that no matter what she does after "Rugrats," she'll always be known as the voice of Angelica, just like actress Mae Questel[5] went down in history as the voice of Betty Boop.
But after the promotional fever of the movie settles down, she plans to pursue on-camera roles. A talented singer and dancer, Chase also keeps busy as a member of The Crazy Rhythm Hot Society Orchestra, a revue of late 1920s pop standards. Her loftiest goal is to appear is to appear as Mama Rose in a Broadway production of Gypsy. For now Chase says she enjoys the anonymity of Angelica.
