Name

Cecil H. Roy

Cecil Roy (October 2, 1900 – January 26, 1995) was a radio and voice actress who was well known in radio broadcasting of the 1930s and 1940s as The Girl of a Thousand Voices. She was a voice-atile actress who could provide voices for fictional characters from newborn to ninety. She voices Little Lulu in the 2002 release Betty Boop and the Girls of Mischief.

Mae Questel did not voice the cartoon character Casper the Friendly Ghost, she did the "background" voices on the show, that is "false information" that was spread by pseudologists. They also once claimed that Questel was the voice of Disney's mascot Minnie Mouse, that was also a fabrication.

However Questel was able to "imitate" the voice of Casper, and did so "over the phone" for Ginny Mahoney's daughter Jeni Mahoney.

On Jack Linkletter 1978 TV show about voice-over commercial stars, Questel was asked to do the voice of "Casper the Friendly Ghost" live. Questel responded by saying, "No, I wasn't Casper the Ghost, I was in Casper the ghost doing various voices." Linkletter responded by saying that he thought she did Casper. Questel told him, "no, I didn't."

This is because the voice of Casper was initially Alan Shay, and later Cecil Roy.

Questel told Linkletter that she mainly voiced Olive Oyl and Betty Boop.

Death

  • Cecil died in 1995 at age 94 in Englewood, New Jersey. She was survived by her son, Richard, of Montclair, New Jersey and four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Trivia

  • Cecil was the original voice of Famous Studios Little Lulu and Casper the Friendly Ghost.
  • Roy also played the roles of Winnie the Pooh, Cindy Bear from Yogi Bear (Songs of Yogi Bear And His Pals) and Raggedy Ann.
  • Sometimes Mae Questel the voice of Betty Boop and Little Audrey often receives credit for Cecil Roy's work. Questel worked with Roy on the same cartoons, but portrayed other characters. For example, in the 1950 Famous Studios short Land of the Lost Jewels, Roy portrayed a boy called Billy, and Questel portrayed a girl called Isabel.
  • Two main sources that have spread misinformation and have removed Cecil Roy's credits (by not doing proper research), include Behind The Voice Actors, and Dave Lee Down Under. However other websites such as "The Free Encyclopedia" and "Cartoon Research" (featuring real historians), have the correct information listed.
