In Dizzy Dishes,[1] Betty Boop is depicted as plump anthropomorphic French poodle. One day, Dave Fleischer handed Grim Natwick a photograph of singer Helen Kane and asked him to design a caricature. Fleischer had found a sound-alike, and planned to use her in the upcoming Talkartoon, Dizzy Dishes. Grim exaggerated Kane’s wide eyes and rosebud mouth, creating a slightly coarse, but strikingly original design. This version of Betty is known as a "Boop-Boop-a-Doop" girl and or "Poo-Poo-Pah-Doop" girl. Betty would later officially be known as the "Boop-Oop-a-Doop" girl.

Quotes

  • Betty Boop: "I have to have Poo-Pah-Doop-Pah-Doop-Pah-Doop-Poo-Poo-Pah-Doop! Whoopee!"

Trivia

  • This in the original debut of Betty, created by Grim Natwick.
  • Her outfit seems to be patterned after "Boop-Boop-a-Doop" singer Helen Kane's outfit from the 1929 film Pointed Heels, especially the gigantic bow.
  • Betty is initially nameless in the cartoon and is usually referred to as a cabaret singer.
  • Dave Fleischer described this version of Betty as being "very ugly". Animators and ex-Fleischer Studios staff all have stated in interviews that this "fatter dog woman" version of Betty is hideous and is not pretty. Though this Betty is not ugly, she pulls some "scary faces" in some of the animated sequences.
  • According to Grim Natwick, Betty was a redheaded blue eyed French poodle.[2]
