Betty Boop's Big Comeback! Mae Questel Upset She Won't Be Voicing Betty Boop! But Says Things Have To Change![1] |

"Betty Boop is a metaphor for the new femininity, assertive yet sexy and just right for the 80's," Ted Hannah said. Mr. Hannah is advertising director of King Features Syndicate; Betty is Betty Boop, about to attempt a big comeback in a cartoon special, a Broadway musical and a new cartoon strip (along with Felix the Cat) by Mort Walker, as well as appearances on countless clocks, ashtrays, mugs, cards, lingerie and T-shirts.
Miss Boop was created by Max Fleischer in the 30's, so what better place to celebrate her return than the Art Deco Rainbow Grill, where, among Tuesday evening's partygoers, were perky Desirée Goyette, the new voice of Betty, and still-bouncy Mae Questel, her previous voice.
"What can I say, things have to change," Miss Questel, who did her first cartoon soundtrack in 1931, said philosophically.
Also celebrating were Bruce Goldstein, the national president of the "Betty Boop Fan Club," and Ruth Kneitel, Mr. Fleischer's daughter Ruth, who owns the rights to Betty Boop, along with her brother, Richard Fleischer.
"Such beefcake!" Mrs. Kneitel said of the new movie her brother directed, Conan the Destroyer. "Boop-Boop-Be-Doop!" she added.
